Bennie Lee Thurman was born in Montague County, Texas in 1897 and grew up in northern Texas and southern Oklahoma. He went to work for the railroad at a young age and spent his entire working life with the railroad. He was a railroad retiree. He married Daisy Dale Norsworthy as a teenager and fathered four children with her. Lola Dell (1917), Leo Lee (1919), Clifton Lee (1921), and Bennie Lee Jr (1927). They divorced in the 40s and he later married Gertrude Ethel Spiller(s), who was his spouse at death. Bennie's railroad work took him to California around the beginning of WWII and he settled in Bakersfield, CA, after retirement at 1612 1/2 Beale Ave. Bennie passed away in the hospital in San Francisco on Oct 17, 1954 at the age of 57 and was buried at Bakersfield Memorial Park by Hopson Mortuary. Bakersfield Memorial Park was acquired by Union Cemetery in 1958 and the name of the cemetery is now Union Cemetery. Bennie was the youngest child of John Callaway Thurman and Mary Mercer Thurman. He had 3 siblings: Eva, Kate, and Sallie Thurman. In addition, he had 7 half-siblings from John Callaway's earlier marraige to Tarilda Farley: Thomas, Kenneth, Maggie, William, James, Joseph, and Laura. He also had 3 half-siblings from Mary Mercer's earlier marraige to B. F. Lanier.
