RIO - Alvin V. Purves, 90, went to sleep dreaming of his years as a dairy farmer in the early morning of Saturday, July 31, 2010.
He had a great love for his cattle and horses. He also had sheep, pigs, and chickens. He enjoyed growing and harvesting the crops
Alvin was born Dec. 10, 1919, at home on East Bush Road, Wyocena township, to Arthur and Eva (Bush) Purves. At 7 ½ years, he lost his right arm while following his father on a sickle hay mower.
He attended Pleasure Hill grade school in Wyocena and graduated from Pardeeville High School in 1937.
In February 1947, he married Dolores Borde. She died in 1964. On June 4, 1966, Alvin married Betty (Jensen) Licitar at Congregation C hurch in Rio. Betty and her children moved to Alvin's farm and became a family.
Alvin purchased his farm in 1941. He built most of the buildings and worked up the land.
Wayne Lawrence was Alvin's right-hand man for more than 40 years. He was a very hard worker, faithful and honest.
Alvin sold his cows in September 1997. It was a very sad day. Upon his retirement, he liked to go for lunch and drive around the countryside.
Pepper - his Dalmatian dog - came into his life in 2003. She has been by his side 24/7 ever since.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Betty, of 44 years with children Louise (Lyle) Elske of Columbus, Steven (Terry) Licitar of Hubertas, Donna (Bruce) Jordan of Belleville, Kathleen (Larry) Earl of Las Vegas and Carol Martin (Rick McGlynn) of Pardeeville; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; faithful dog, Pepper; special friend, Lori Lang; half-brother, Darwin; and many nieces, nephews, other near relatives and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Dolores; sister, Rachel; brother, Glen; sisters-in-law, Elaine and Rita; brother-in-law, Charlie; granddaughter Susie; nephews Tom and Michael; and his right-hand man, Wayne.
We wish to thank Divine Savior Hospital; doctors; nurses; and everyone who helped support our family. Special thanks to Hospice and Smith -Vangen Funeral Home for the care and concern given. Our neighbors and friends have been wonderful. We are truly blessed.
