Sabert Oglesby died peacefully at his home Saturday morning, January 29, 2011. He was President and C.E.O. of Southern Research Institute from 1980-1987, having first joined the Institute in 1946. He was a pioneer in air pollution control; his work on electrostatic precipitators has made an impact on the air we all breathe. He was named International Fellow by the International Committee on Electrostatic Precipitator Technology in July, 1986. He was involved with work that led to the heat shield technology which protects U.S. spacecraft as they enter the earth's atmosphere. He traveled around the world leading numerous conferences and international engineering projects. The Southern Research Environmental Sciences Building is named in his honor.

A native of Birmingham, AL, he was the son of Sabert and Myrtle Dunn Oglesby. He graduated from Auburn University in 1943 and received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1950. He and his wife of 66 years, Carolyn Vance Oglesby, were married March 4, 1944, during World War II. They had been residents of Birmingham since 1951.

Mr. Oglesby was president of the Birmingham Music Club, entertaining such renowned artists as violinist Isaac Stern and tenor Luciano Pavarotti. He and his wife were active in other cultural organizations, and were supporters of Indian Springs School and Birmingham Southern College music programs.

Known for his kind and genuine nature, he was widely admired and respected. His honors include the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame (1989); Auburn University's Ben S. Gilmer Award for Engineering Excellence (1990); Auburn University Engineering Outstanding Alumnus Award (1992); State of Alabama Academy of Honor (1999); Birmingham Business Hall of Fame (2007).
