During the Revolutionary War, John Ogden served as a private in Captain Isaac Halsey's militia company. He was also a Minuteman and he saw service on the NJ Line in Captain James Wheeler's company.

John Ogden was the brother of David Ogden, Jr. and the husband of Phebe Howard (m. 1762).
