Fred Messerschmidt Is Crash Victim.
Fred G. Messerschmidt, 52, of 814 Thirty-third st., a life insurance salesman, was killed Wednesday night when his car struck a Rock Island freight train at a crossing on Highway 69, five miles east of Clarion, Ia.
Mr. Messerschmidt, an agent for the Peoples Life Insurance Co., was thrown clear of the car and was dead when found. He had been driving south toward Des Moines.
According to Conductor S. E. Dillon, of Estherville, Ia., Messerschmidt's car struck the train about 10 cars ahead of the caboose and became wedged under the train after being dragged several hundred feet.
Dillon said he set the train's brakes when he saw the car.
Mr. Messerschmidt's divorced wife, Dr. Bertha Messerschmidt, an osteopathic physician, and a son, George, left immediately for Clarion. They said the body would be returned to Des Moines.

Funeral services were being arranged Thursday for Fred G. Messerschmidt, 814 Thirty-third st., a life insurance salesman who was killed Wednesday night when his automobile collided with a train five miles east of Clarion, Ia.
Mr. Messerschmidt had been a Des Moines resident since 1920. He had been employed by several insurance companies and at the time of his death was an agent for the Peoples Life Insurance Col.
He was born at St. Charles, Minn., and was a Shriner.
Mr. Messerschmidt is survived by his son, George, three sisters, and two brothers.
