US Congressman. Born in Aurora, Indiana, he spent the early part of his life on farms in Indiana, Missouri and was a school teacher in Iowa. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a 1st Sergeant in Company K, 10th Kansas Infantry. After the war, he studied law at Mount Vernon Indiana, was admitted to the bar in 1873 and commenced to practice law in Carbon, Indiana. Moving to Brazil, Indiana, he was Mayor of Brazil (1877-80, 1887-88) city attorney in 1884 and a member of the city council, (1892-96). In 1901, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-seventh Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1909. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he returned to his law practice until his death at age 94 in Brazil, Indiana.
