Rose M. (nee Mycio) Brendel, 85, of North Port, Fla., passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011.
She was born Oct. 27, 1925, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Wasil and Julia (nee Maksymik) Mycio.
Rose came here in 1978 from New York. In 1950, Rose owned and operated a deli in Buffalo. In early 1960, she owned Saints Corner (a tavern) in Cheektowaga, N.Y., and later in 1960, she was founder and operator of Towns Ambulance Service. Rose was the first woman ambulance driver. In 1970, she was a respiratory therapist at St. Joseph Hospital in Cheektowaga. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the VFW, the Grandmother's Club, and the Cutties (help group), all in North Port.
Rose is survived by her children, Paul (Michele) Witucki of Amherst, N.Y., Cheryl (Peter) Gala of Lancaster, N.Y., Donald (Elizabeth) Witucki of Amherst, N.Y., and Randal Brendel of North Port; seven grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; and sister, Mary Smith-Taylor.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a service at 5:30 p.m., today, Thursday, June 23, 2011, at McKee Funeral & Cremation Services, 14538 Tamiami Trail, North Port. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cheektowaga.
