State Soldier Honored for Hawaii Deeds
Fourteen Decorated for Heroism Details Page 3.
A Minnesota soldier today was one of those awarded the distinguished service cross for valor during the Pearl Harbor raids In Hawaii. He is Pvt. Robert J. Endres, Faribault, Minn., son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Endres of that city. The citation said that during the Dec. 8 bombing Endres at his own initiative ran to a nearby abandoned truck and despite a rain of aerial machine gun fire and bursting bombs proceeded about the air field, collecting wounded who were lying in the open. Filling his vehicle with casualties, he proceeded to the station hospital, unloaded the wounded and returned to the field. With complete disregard of his own safety, Endres made seven such round trips each with a cargo of casualties, despite continual bombing and strafing. "His heroic action under tremendous odds saved many wounded from further mutilation or death."
