John enlisted for service during World War One on January 06, 1916 with the 147th (Grey) Battalion at Owen Sound, Ontario., regimental number 438499. He served overseas with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles and was wounded at Passchendaele, during the same action where his brother William Cecil Davis, was killed. He was invalided to England. John's wounds were not severe and he was posted back to France by the following April, 1918. On returning to France, he fell ill. He rejoined the 4th CMR on August 16, 1918, but was with his unit for only two days before he fell ill again. In December, he was posted back to England. Within a month, he was diagnosed with Pulmonary Tuberculosis and hospitalized. John was invalided back to Canada in April, 1919; and discharged as medically unfit on May 23, 1919. On discharge, he was admitted to a sanatorium, where he was a patient for nearly a year.

John married Florence Louise Lawrence on November 10, 1924 at Durham, Ontario. Together they had one daughter, Margaret Louise Davis.

John died of Tuberculosis at Owen Sound, Ontario on December 01, 1926. His death was ruled to have been caused by his military service during World War One.
