US Congressman, US Senator, Lumber baron. In 1858, he founded I. Stephenson Lumber Mill in Escanaba, Michigan. He was later elected to represent Wisconsin's 9th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1883 to 1889. Also served as a Member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1866 to 1868, Alternate Delegate to Republican National Convention from Wisconsin in 1868. From 1907 to 1915 he served as a United States Senator from Wisconsin.
