Rev. Berg Dies Playing Paddleball

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Lutheran Church for Pastor Calvin E. Berg, 45, of 2609 S. Sherman Ave., who was dead on arrival at a Sioux Falls hospital.

The Rev. Mr. Berg collapsed while playing paddleball at the YMCA Thursday noon. An autopsy is pending according to Minnehaha County Coroner Dr. R. D.Schultz.

Pastor Berg was born Oct. 17, 1924, at Solway, Minn. He was graduated from Bemidji High School and Concordia College. He was married to Mona Bilden at Minneapolis April 14, 1952. From September of that year until August 1953 he interned at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato with the Reverend Jennings G. Feroe. Following his graduation from Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul in 1954 he served parishes at Boyd and St. James prior to coming to Sioux Falls in 1968.

He served as chairman of the stewardship committee for southwestern Minnesota district of the American Lutheran Church from 1960 to 1966. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Good Samaritan Society from 1963 to 1967. At the time of his death he was the regional director of the Good Samaritan Society for the states of Minnesota and North Dakota.

Survivors include his widow; two sons, David, a sophomore at St. Olaf college, and Jonathan, at home; a daughter, Rachael, at home, his mother, Mrs. Henry Berg, Bemidji; a brother, Orville, Solway, Minn.; and four sisters, Mrs. Ruben Leonard, Lake Crystal, Minn.; Hazel Berg, Bemidji, Minn.; Mrs. Alvin Skibsrud, Deer Lodge, Mont.; and Doris Berg, Minneapolis.
