Woman Who Once Sang in Six Languages Now Rides Miles to Teach

Although her concert repertoire once included twenty-five songs in six languages, Miss Marie Altona, 80-year-old lyric soprano, lives today for the thrill of her weekly sixty-mile bus trips to teach pupils who cannot come to her.

Since 1920, Miss Altona has made her home in Dallas, but she was born in Alton, Ill., hence the name Altona. She sang for the coronation of King Edward in Convent Garden.

Her real name is Mary A. Fitch. According to Miss Altona, an ancestor, John Fitch, was the first to invent the steamboat. Her father was a journalist who served his apprenticeship on the New York Times.

She sings in Italian, French, German, Norwegian and Russian.
