Monsignor spent a great part of his ministry working in Catholic Charities, until he became pastor of St. Anna’s parish in Leominster where he had served as curate in the 1950s.
He also served as chairman of: Montachusett Anti-Poverty Program, Massachusetts Catholic Conference, New England Catholic Council of Social Ministries, Social Service Committee, and the National Conference of Catholic Charities.
He was born the son of the late Vincenzo and Maria (Perrone) Battista. He attended Holy Cross College. In 1961 he acquired his master’s in social work from Boston College School of Social Work.
In 1980 he worked in Thailand with refugees. At home he was involved in Cuban, Vietnamese, and Polish resettlement programs. He often advocated at Statehouse hearings for pro-Life, welfare, health, and addiction issues.
