Benjamin Franklin Lambert was born in Indiana, the son of Leroy Lambert and Narcissa Murrow. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years at Redfield, Iowa, July 9 and was mustered into Company I, 18th Iowa Infantry, on August 6, 1862. Private Lambert was mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas, July 20, 1865. His brother, Charles M. Lambert (Co. H, 39th Iowa Infantry), died as a Prisoner of War at Andersonville, Georgia. He married (1) Laura Hunter (born 1848) in 1870. After she died in 1872 he married (2) Alice Charity Marshall July 1, 1875. He filed for a Civil War veteran's pension in Iowa July 25, 1890, and received application No. 857,747 and certificate No. 590,249. Sometime about 1900 he moved his family to Santa Maria, California, where he became a member of Foote Post, No. 89, Grand Army of the Republic (1895 Iowa Census, 1900 US Census). After his death Alice filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Santa Maria December 10, 1904, and received application No. 818,183 and certificate No. 597,577.
