Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. In 1862 he helped organize what would become the 76th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and served as Captain of Company B. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on August 22, 1862 and to Colonel and commander of the regiment on January 7, 1863. Brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 9, 1865 for "gallant conduct in leading his regiment in the assault on Fort Blakely, Alabama", he was honorably mustered out on July 22, 1865. After serving as a bank president and as Mayor of Urbana, Illinois, he was elected as a Democrat to represent Illinois' 15th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1891 to 1893.
