Meredith Patterson Collins was the son of Meredith Collins and Maria A (last name unknown). His father was born 13 Mar 1789 in Boone's Station, Fayette, Kentucky; died sometime after the 5 Dec 1850 census, probably in Gaston, Sumter, Alabama. Additional information on his mother is unknown.

Meredith Patterson Collins m1 Sarah Ann Gilmore in Gaston, Sumter Co., AL on either 27 Dec 1852 or 9 Jan 1853 (the earlier date may be the marriage license date) and m2 Judith Ann (Henning) Meriwether in 1882. Merideth and Sarah are believed to have had nine children (links below):

Meredith and Judith had no children.

Meredith's first wife, Sarah Ann Gilmore, was the daughter of John W. Gilmore and Mary Grey Alston. Mary Alston is a direct descendent of William Alston born in England, 12 generations earlier, during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307). Sarah Gilmore's sister Elizabeth married Meredith's brother John W. Collins. In 1860 Meredith was a Station Agent for the Mobile & Ohio Railroad in Shubuta (Clark County), Mississippi. Near the end of the Civil War, in early 1865, they were located in Mt. Sterling, Alabama at the time of the birth of one of their daughters. Frances Elizabeth. They returned to Clark County, Mississippi, and in 1869 moved to Madison County, Tennessee (to about 7 miles north of Jackson) where in 1872 he was operating a cotton gin on the Christmasville Road. He had also operated a brick-making plant and made the bricks for his own home. Their home was known as "Locust Grove" and they lived there the rest o their lives. He is buried in a private cemetery near the home. It is still kept up. He was married again in 1882 to a widowed neighbor, Judith Ann (Henning) Meriwether. She had three children. Meredith and Judith had no further children. After their wedding Meredith moved in with Judith and her children, while Mary Collins managed the Collins home until Judith died and Meredith returned to his home.
