He was born September 1, 1920, in Leksand, Sweden, the son of Anders Beck and Karin (Gavels) Beck. Gunnar had been in the La Porte area since 1948, coming from Sweden.
Gunnar was a carpenter for Larson-Danielson Construction for thirty-four years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and the Viking Club of Chicago, and was a veteran of the Swedish Army during WW II. Gunnar enjoyed flowers, gardening, feeding the birds, woodworking, and liked golf. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On December 21, 1946 in Leksand, Sweden, he married Berny (Pederson) Beck who preceded him in death April 7, 2008.
He is survived by his son, James (Mary Jo) Beck Sr. of La Porte; three grandchildren, Anthony "Tony" Beck of La Porte, Jennifer Beck of Columbus, Ohio, and James Richard Beck Jr. of Putnam, Connecticut; and five great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Chrissy, Serenity, Jordan and Amethyst.
Gunnar was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son, Jan Gunnar Beck.
There will be no visitation. Cremation will take place.
A Graveside Service will be held at Carmel Cemetery, Monday June 13, 2011, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Interment will follow.
