James Russell "Hawk" Hawkins, 60, of Tyler passed away Friday, June 17, 2011. He was born August 15, 1950 in Tyler and graduated from John Tyler High School in 1968.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery with the Reverend Gerry Giles officiating. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Directors with the Reverend Doctors John Robbins and Doug Baker officiating.
Hawk was a Certified Peace Officer for the Smith County Sheriff's Office and served as a Reserve Deputy. In 2008, Sheriff J. B. Smith presented Hawk the Volunteer of the Year award for his numerous hours of dedicated service. He retired from LaGloria Oil & Gas and was an ambulance driver for the East Texas Ambulance Service in his early 20's. Hawk was a life-long member of Marvin United Methodist Church where he was active in the television ministry. He volunteered at the St. Paul Children's foundation and was a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge #53 and a member of Sharon Shrine Temple. Hawk was kind-hearted, would help anyone, and never met a stranger.
Honorary pallbearers will be the deputies of the Smith County Sheriff's office.
Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home 5-7 p.m. Sunday.
