John W. Buffum Died Suddenly In Church In California.
Word was received the latter part of the week concerning the sudden death of John Wesley Buffum, of Long Beach, uncle of E.H. Buffum, of Toulon, who passed away Sunday evening, 22 April 1923, at Long Beach, California. The deceased lived in the LaFayette vicinity for many years and will be remembered by the older residents of Stark county.
The Long Beach Press has the following obituary and account of his passing.
"John Wesley Buffum, uncle of Mayor C.A. Buffum and E.E. Buffum, owners of Buffums' Department Store, dropped dead last night after he had addressed the Brotherhood of Men at the First Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Buffum had just taken his seat in the auditorium of the church when he was stricken with heart failure and died instantly.
Two physicians were summoned and every effort was made to revive him. He was 79 years of age.
Mr. Buffum is the father-in-law of F.A. Ziegler of the Savings department of the Farmers' and Merchants' bank with whom he made his home during the past year. He had been a member of the Methodist church for sixty years, and, as at the hour of his death, he had always been a great worker in the church.
He was born on a farm in a rural district of Illinois in 1844 and spent his early years there. He enlisted in the army at the outbreak of the Civil War and served to its close. During the past fifty years he has been a prominent member of the Grand Army of the Republic and was also a Gideon.
After the Civil War he took up work as a commercial salesman and became influential in the development of the order of Gideons. Five years ago Mr. Buffum came to California to retire and enjoy a rest after his active life. He first lived at Westgate, California, but during the past year he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. F.A. Ziegler, 2101 Pasadena Avenue.
Besides his relatives in Long Beach, one daughter, Mrs. Eva Fritz, living at Lacota, North Dakota dn three sons, Eugene Buffum, Scott City, Kansas, Herbert Buffum and A.C. Buffum, of Topeka, Kansas, survive him. Funeral arrangements will be made when word is received from relatives in the east. The body is at Peek and Coon Undertaking parlors.
He had little red bible his Mother gave to him before she left him to go to heaven, he was a young boy with older brother and one young sister. My Father left us had a heart attack after preaching at the University By the Sea in Long Beach. This was on Sunday at the First M.E. Church in Long Beach, California. He spoke to the Men's Brotherhood in the main auditorium before service which began at 11:00 am. My Father said "this old heart is beating now but soon it will be stopping" then he sat down (next to his daughter) and he was gone.
