The fifth child of John and Eveline Goodlett Hawkins,he grew up in Greenville, SC. During the Civil War, he followed family traditon and served in the Army of the Confederate States.
In 1870, he moved from Greenville, SC to Clayton County Georgia where he ran a retail dry goods store. In 1871, he married Martha G. Carnes of Jonesboro, Clayton County, Georiga. John and Martha were the parents of eleven children.
After 1880, the family moved to LaGrange, Georgia, where John owned a dry goods store. He lived there with his wife, Martha, until his death in 1915.
