William was the oldest son of Samuel and Ruth (Parker) Hobbs.
Around 1850 William opened a business as a wagon maker in Paoli, Indiana. About this time he was also appointed the first postmaster of Paoli. Around 1851 William preaching in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He later taught school for a few years and then took up the study of medicine. When the Civil War began he enlisted in the Union Army as an assistant surgeon from September 10th, 1862 until October 19th, 1864 with the 85th Indiana Volunteers.
After the war William moved his family to a farm near Livonia, Indiana and he began the practice of medicine. In 1874 he moved to Raglesville and purchased a practice. He practiced medicine in the town until his death.

Married Mary Ann Elrod on April 25, 1844, in Orange County, Indiana.
