Churchman died Thursday at his home after a brief illness. He was 77.
He was born in Ardmore, Okla., and graduated from North Dallas High School in 1929. He worked at several odd jobs before joining the University Park Police Department, where he worked for 40 years.
He retired as the assistant chief of police in the late 1970s.
Churchman was a member of Hella Temple Shrine and rode for 17 years with the Blackhorse Patrol, a Shriner organization.
He is survived by his wife, Jewel Churchman of Dallas; a son, Joseph Churchman of Dallas; a sister, Emajean Fitzpatrick of Mesilla Park, N.M.; and two grandsons.
Memorials may be made to the Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children.
