Samuel was the youngest child of farmers Samuel R. & Mary Ann (Lobaugh) Thompson. He married Mary Ellen DeHart in Callensburg, PA on Aug 17, 1871 and they had 11 children.

Clarion Democrat, Oct 26, 1933 - "Samuel R. Thompson one of the prominent and esteemed citizens of Callensburg died at his home in that place Saturday evening, October 21, 1933. Mr. Thompson leaves his wife and the following children: Elmer S. Thompson, Oil City; Mrs. Harry Holiday and Mrs. T. E. Divens, Sligo; Guy Thompson, New Bethlehem; Glenn Thompson, Mrs. Lee Summerville and Mrs. Beryl Yingling, Rimersburg; Albert Thompson, St. Petersburg; Mrs. Harry McCall, Parkers Landing and John I. Thompson, Salem, W. Va. Funeral services were conducted at the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and interment was made in Callensburg Cemetery."

The Knox Herald, Nov 9, 1933 - Samuel R. Thompson was born February 7, 1851, and died at his home in Callensburg, October 21, age 82 years, 8 months and 14 days. He was a son of Samuel R. and Mary (Lobaugh) Thompson. He was united in marriage to Mary Ellen DeHart on August 17, 1871, and to this union eleven children were born – six daughters and five sons, all of whom survive, except one daughter, Eva Pearl Pollock, who preceded her father in death 24 years ago. Mr. Thompson united with the Mount Zion M. E. Church when quite young and had been a constant member of that church ever since. Mr. Thompson was highly esteemed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held from his late home in Callensburg, Tuesday afternoon, October 23, at 2:00 o'clock, and were conducted by Rev. Harmon of Callensburg. Interment was made in the Mount Zion Cemetery. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers. He is survived by his wife and the following named children: Mrs. Bertha Holliday, Sligo; Mrs. Mary Thompson, Oil City; John Thompson, Lumberport, W. Va.; Mrs. Lydia McCall, Parkers Landing; Guy Thompson, St. Petersburg; Mrs. Elva Divins, Sligo; Glenn Thompson, Rimersburg and Mrs. Viora Summerville, Rimersburg. He is also survived by 46 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren.
