Col Murchison was the 2nd son
of Duncan Murchison, whose father
had come from Scotland in 1773.
The Col graduated fm Chappel Hill
in 1853, after which he engaged
in business in New York City and
Wilmington until the spring of
1861, when he disposed of his
business in the North & assisted
in the organization of a
Company of troops at Fayettville,
NC. He entered service as a 2nd
Lt and commanded Company C of
the 8th Reg NC Infantry and he
escape capture with his unit by
being absent on military detail.
He then organized another com-
pany in the Fayetteville area
and it was assigned to the 54th
NC Infantry Regiment him as Cap-
tain. Promotion to Major, Lt Col
and Colonel of the 54th followed.
Commended by General Law for
gallant service at Fredricksburg.
Fought at Chancellorsville,
Winchester & Williamsport.
Captured and held prisoner
at Johnson's Island on
Lake Erie for 20 months ending
in July, 1865. Resumed business
in New York and Wilmington.
Purchased Orton Plantation and
spent a large amount of money
restoring it from the war years.
He also built the "Orton" hotel
at his expense when no one else
would venture the investment.
