Peggy Clapp Scherer was the sixth child of Barnhardt and Judith Faust Clapp, born in North Carolina in 1791. On January 24, 1811, she married Frederick Scherer in Guilford County, North Carolina. Sometime between the mid-1830s and mid-1840s the family moved to Montgomery County, Illinois, to farm and be with other Scherer brothers who had moved to the area. Peggy and Frederick had sixteen children.
