Joseph was the 2nd of three sons born to William R. and Della M. (Osenbach) McCarty. His siblings were Morris and Harry Harper McCarty.
He married Julia Townsend in 1933.

Joseph M'Carty Taken by Death
Joseph W. McCarty, 53, a member of the Tippecanoe County Selective Service Board, died at 9:20 a. m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, after a short illness. He suffered a heart attack Tuesday and was taken to the hospital Thursday.
Mr. McCarty, who was also a public school teacher and principal and farmer a number of years, resided in the family homestead, two miles east of the city on McCarty Lane, where he was born Dec. 22, 1895. He was a son of the late W. R. McCarty and of Mrs. McCarty. After graduating from Jefferson High School, he entered Purdue University, graduating from the School of Science in 1920. For a number of years he taught school; he was principal of the Jackson, Stockwell, Romney and Monitor schools in this county and of the Adams and Rock Creek schools in Carroll County. He had been teaching several years in West Lafayette High School when he took up farming about four years ago. With re-activation of selective service, he was named to the county board. For several years he was also a field man for a publishing company.
In 1933 he was married to Julia Townsend. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, the Elks lodge and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at Purdue. Mr. McCarty was also prominent as a singer. Surviving are the widow, with his mother, the latter a resident of West Lafayette. The late Morris E. McCarty, superintendent of Lafayette public schools, was a brother.
