Oneida River Gives Up Frank Denka, Drowned When Boat Capsizes

Swept Over Dam
To Death; Fishing
Companion Saved

Men on Shore Pull A. E.
Hobbs Out of Water—
Both Employed Here.

The body of Frank Denka, 40, of 409 Cypress Street [Liverpool, NY], with a cut in the head, was taken from the Oneida River about 50 feet below the Caughdenoy dam at 10 o’clock this morning, where he drowned in the vortex of a waterfall while out fishing last night.

Denka and Albert E. Hobbs, 25, of 504 Oswego Street, Liverpool, were hurled out of their fishing boat which was flung against the dam by back-suction.

Hobbs was swept underwater and out of the pull of the current before he could help Denka or make a move to help himself. Men ashore helped him from the water, which is only five feet deep at the place of the accident.

Fellow-employes at the Continental Can Company plant in Syracuse, Denka and Hobbs drove in Denka’s car to Caughdenoy to fish for pike. They had been out three hours, anchored about 50 feet below the dam when suddenly aware that their boat was being pulled toward the dam.

Denka’s son, Neil, 6, was killed by a motor truck March 11 while on his way home from school. Denka is survived by his wife, a daughter, Frances, 12, and his parents. He had been ill and either that or the fact that he might have been dazed by hitting the dam may be taken to account for his drowning in water only five feet deep.

Howard Van Auken and Crawford Bentin, Caughdenoy, helped Hobbs after the accident. He was chilled, bruised and shocked. The boat, which the men hired from August Egleston, operating a livery [?], remained upset in the vortex.

Caughdenoy men who recovered the body used a bridge of boats to get the captive fishing-boat from under the falls. They reported that the oars were tied with the anchor-rope and that they had to cut the rope to get the boat free. George Traub, Central Square, took charge of the body.
