Funeral services for Robert M. Stuart, 72, 702 Ludvig Ave., Rock Springs, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Kenneth Biel will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in the Mountain View section of the Rock Springs Municipal Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jack Collins, Darwin Collins, Robert Barwick, Robert Ferguson, Frank Angeli and Herb Brown. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul J. Wataha, Richard Canestrini, Glen Heagney, Harry Thuesen, Dr. R.R. Menghini, Leno Menghini, Adolph Floretta, Robert Cuthebertson Sr., Herbert I. Wilde Sr., William Fleming, G.E. Kessner, Richard Webster, Lloyd E. Hess, Joseph Datlich and Jack Crookston.

Mr. Stuart died at 3 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.

A lifetime resident of Rock Springs, he was born here Jan. 13, 1902 and had served with the Rock Springs Fire Department 33 years, 6 ½ years as chief.

He attended schools in Rock Springs and after leaving school worked in the coal mines. He began his employment with the Fire Department Jan. 9, 1935 as a relief fireman and later was permanently stationed at the No. 2 Fire Station.

His service with the fire department was interrupted during World War II when he spent three years in the U.S. Army, one year in the United States and two years in Great Britain and France. Mr. Stuart served with military fire units and was a fire chief during a training period in the U.S.

He also took the first American Fire Department into France during the Normandy Invasion June 7, 1944. On arriving in France, Stuart was appointed first assistant district fire marshal, an office he held until he was returned to the United States for his honorable discharge from service June 11, 1945.

Upon his return to Rock Springs, he was reassigned to his position on the fire department under the administration of the late Dr. T.H. Roe.

He married Gretchen Anderson Oct. 23, 1945 in Rock Springs.

Mr. Stuart was appointed acting chief by Mayor Paul J. Wataha on June 3, 1963. He retired from the department April 15, 1969.

Mr. Stuart was past master of Rock Springs Lodge No. 12, AF and AM; past patron of Mountain Lily chapter No. 10 Order of Eastern Star; past noble grand of the International Order of Odd Fellows; past grand chancellor of the Knights of Pythias Sweetwater Lodge No. 6; a member of the American Legion, the Neighbors of Woodcraft; American Assn of Retired Persons and was vice president of the Rock Springs Young-at-Heart Senior Citizens Center.

Surviving are his wife, Gretchen of Rock Springs; a sister, Mrs. John (Agnes) Collins Sr. of Rock Springs; and a brother, Nat Stuart of Denver, Colo.
