Dorothy was born to Bernard and Nita (Macey) Spannagel in Cedar Bluff, Kan. on Aug. 30, 1926. She lived in Kansas until she married Theodore "Ted" H. Estes in Wichita Falls, Texas on Dec. 12, 1947. They moved to the Bay Area of California, where she worked at a variety of jobs, including being manager of the hardware store on Hamilton Air Force Base, being a retail store clerk and working in a bus depot.
In 1971 she moved from Petaluma, Calif. to Adel where she cooked for the buckaroo crew at the MC Ranch. In 1973 she moved in to Lakeview and was a cook's helper at the A. D. Hay School and retired after about 16 years service. After retirement she became an in-home caregiver for about 10 years and then owned and operated a licensed developmental disability foster care home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ted; brother Charles; sisters Marjorie and Frances.
Dorothy is survived by son and daughter-in-law Charles and Jejei Estes of Lakeview; daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and James Lourance of Lakeview; sister Jeanie Duffy of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren Sheri Morgan, Chris Estes, Todd Estes and Leticia Bartholomew; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
