Ophelia E. Nevitt had a lifetime of sadness and emotional pain. Her own mother died when she was six weeks old, and she was raised by her aunt, Mrs. Louisa Williams. She married Benjamin Franklin Nevitt in 1852 and had two daughters; one was my great-grandmother, Alice Nevitt, born in 1854. The other daughter, Florence Nevitt was born in 1859, and died in 1862, at three years of age. Ophelia also lost her husband Benjamin in that same year; he was a private in the Civil War (Unit 41 Alabama Infantry). He was 33 years of age, and Ophelia was only 28. Almost six years after the death of her daughter, Ophelia once again found happiness in her life by marrying Thomas N. Cohen, in Pickens County, Alabama. The following year, she gave birth to a son, Benjamin Thomas Cohen, followed by another daughter, Mary Ophelia. A terrrible storm hit North Pickens County, AL, on February 24, 1875, and at 37 years of age, Ophelia, her second husband Thomas, and Mary Ophelia were all killed when their home was swept away in the storm. Their young son was wounded, and it is unknown who raised him after that. I believe he may have been living with my great grandparents, Alice Neviitt Cohen and Clifford Palmer Cohen at the time of the 1880 census in Carrollton, Pickens County, Alabama. There is a Benjamin Thomas Cohen, Age 11, listed at their residence, who is identified as Clifford's brother-in-law...he may have been Alice Nevitt Cohen's half-brother.

01/21/2022 note from K.W. Darr (49723522): Ophelia is the sister of Rebecca H. Williams Darr (FAG# 63177643)
