James Hardcastle was born in North Carolina. He had siblings Eli, Hugh, Elisha, Elizabeth Hardcastle and 2 half-siblings John and Polly Calhoun. Their father's name was never mentioned in the extensive memoirs James' nephew Elias wrote about the family published by Marcus Lowthorp in The Life and Times of Elias Hardcastle.

James married Amy C Pate in Butler county Alabama around 1838. They had 4 children: Narcissus C, Susan E, Josiah F and Elijah B born in Alabama from 1840 - 1846. The family then moves and is found on the 1850 Rapides, Louisiana census. Daughter Annie was born in Louisiana in 1850.
Their remaining children: John H, James F, Lucius, Eli, William, and Sarah E. were all born in Texas, probably Milam county.

Amy C Pate, his wife, is the sister of James' brother Eli's wife Susan B Pate-Hardcastle. They were both daughters of Abimilec Pate and Susannah (LNU).
