ATWOOD – Max Lee Barnett, 83, of Atwood passed away at 3:40 p.m. on Tuesday (June 14, 2011) at Kirby Hospital in Monticello.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 17, at the United Church of Atwood, 210 N. Main St., Atwood. The Rev. Dennis Hanner will officiate. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the funeral. Burial with military rites will be in the Mackville Cemetery in Atwood. The Edwards Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Max was born on Oct. 23, 1927, in Mecca, Ind. He was a son of Frank William Barnett and Goldia Mae (Cox) Barnett. He married Linda Lea Taylor on March 20, 1968, in Sullivan.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Barnett of Atwood; four children, Connie Lovellette and her husband Bryan of Clinton, Ind., Max Lee Barnett II and his wife Sonja of Nashville, Tenn., David B. Barnett of Atwood and Kimberly A. Gee and her husband Gary of Hammond, Ill.; and six grandchildren, Mark, Cade, Carrie, Joshua, Jessica and Scottie; one sister, Marjorie Black of Rantoul; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Dick Barnett, and one sister, Phyllis Starr.

Max was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Chrisman and the James Reeder American Legion Post 770 in Atwood. He was also an Army veteran of World War II.

He had been employed at DuPont in Newport, Ind., and Olean-Mathis in Niagara Fall, N.Y. In 1960, he came to U.S.I. in Tuscola, where he retired after 25 years of service.

He enjoyed drawing and photography. He could fix anything. He was also good at the computer and loved animals. He liked listening to music and watching college sports, especially his two favorite teams, the Illini and Notre Dame.
