Carl R. "Sonny" Sweitzer died at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in Arbors East Care Facility, Columbus, Ohio after a long battle with emphysema. He was 80.

Mr. Sweitzer was born on Feb. 4, 1922, in Sligo, Pa., to the late Fred and Elsie Stopp Sweitzer.

Sonny lived in Hubbard and Masury Ohio until 1994, when he moved to Columbus where his sons Gary and Keith (both now deceased and buried in the Columbus area) resided.

Mr. Sweitzer retired as an electrician from the former Sharon Steel Corp. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific during WWII.

During WWII he served aboard the, U.S.S. Halligan, a Fletcher Class Destroyer whose sinking he survived at Okinawa March 26, 1945. 145 of his shipmates were not as fortunate.

In addition to children Keith and Linda Lou, Sonny and Eunice Sweitzer had one additional child, Gary Sweitzer, b 3/19/1946 in Sharon, PA., died 4/18/2009 in the Columbus, OH area.

EM 2/c Carl Sweitzer, age 23, was rescued from the deck of a sinking destroyer off Okinawa. Sweitzer is spending his first leave in two years with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sweitzer of 104 3rd Ave.

Mr and Mrs. P.E. Roth, New Wilmington, announce the engagement and coming marriage of their daughter Eunice to EM 2/c Carl Reynolds Sweitzer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sweitzer, 3rd Ave.
The wedding will take pace at a candlelight service Tuesday June 5 at 8 P.M. in Oakland Ave, Methodist Church. Rev. E.W. Chitester will officiate. The couple will leave for a short wedding trip immediately following the ceremony.
