BENNIE RAY HODGES
1938-2011

Bennie Ray Hodges passed from this world into the arms of his Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, June 13, in Bellville, Texas after a lengthy battle with vascular dementia. Bennie was born April 23, 1938 in Jayton, Texas, to Ben and Nettie Hodges. He graduated Colorado City High School in Colorado City, Texas in 1957. He attained a Barber's Degree from Barber College in Lubbock, Texas. In February 1958, he married his high school sweetheart Katrinka Ann Lewallen. They moved to Lake Jackson, Texas where Bennie barbered at French's Barber Shop before opening his own Bennie's Barber Shop.

Bennie and Ann had three children, sons Randall Ray Hodges and Bradley Jay Hodges, and daughter Kellie Chanel Hodges. He loved and took great pride in his children and their accomplishments and was involved in all their school and extracurricular activities. He was especially proud that all three obtained college degrees. He enjoyed all his grandchildren who lovingly called him Ben-Ben.

He was a volunteer fireman for the Lake Jackson Fire Department for over 40 years, and in 1973 he started working as Fire Department Supervisor for Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas. He retired in 1992 and opened a water purification store in Clute called The Windmill Water Store, which he and Ann owned and operated. After Ann passed away in July 1999, Bennie maintained ownership of the Windmill Water Store until he sold it in 2001.

Bennie's passion, besides being a fireman, was restoring old cars. He restored many Model A's, Model, T's, and Mustangs to their original beauty, but his real love was the Model A. The love affair with old cars began when he was a teenager in high school, and continued for over 50 years. He was a master mechanic and body man, and the cars came alive under his skillful hands. His last restoration accomplishment was a 1929 Model T touring car that he finished in 2006. He was also an avid hunter. His best times and memories were hunting dove, deer, and turkey with his sons, brothers and friends. He never missed an opening day of any season.

Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Nettie Hodges, his older brother, George Alton Hodges, his sister Juanita Hodges Biggs, his brother-in-law Jack Biggs, and his wife of 41 years, Ann Hodges.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years and dear friend for 44 years, Barbara Gayle Hodges of Bellville, Texas; son Randy Hodges and wife Jacqueline of Montgomery, Texas; son Brad Hodges of Humble, Texas; daughter Kellie Hodges Jones and husband Keith of Kingwood, Texas; step-daughter Kelley McDowell and husband Tawn of Saginaw, Texas; step-daughter Staci Walden of Lake Jackson, Texas; grandsons Matthew, John and Sam Hodges, Jordan and Jackson Jones; granddaughters Rachel and Allison Hodges; step-grandaugher Kendra Walden; step-grandson Bryson McDowell; brother Doug Hodges and wife Dawn of Bellville, Texas; sister-in-law Patricia Hodges of The Woodlands, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
