Alexandra A. Koontz, known to her friends as Sandy, passed away on February 9 at the age of 90 years. She was born on March 31, 1917 in Rochester, NY to Danish immigrant parents, Mathias and Annie Jacobsen. When she was 3 years old, the family moved West and settled in Inglewood, California. For the next 87 years, Sandy would make the South Bay her home. Her youth was highlighted by outstanding athletic achievements in softball, basketball and volleyball while attending Inglewood High School. By the time of her graduation in 1935, she had earned the nickname, "Babe," after the 1932 Olympic medalist Babe Zaharias. It was the name most of her family and close friends referred to her throughout her life. In 1936, she married her high school sweetheart, Louis M. DeLong and the following year gave birth to her son, Ronald. In the late '30s she worked at See's Candies. During World War II she worked as a machinist for North American Aviation, while her husband served in the Marine Corps. Following his return from war in 1945, the couple divorced. In 1946, she became one of the first employees of the newly opened McCulloch Motor Company plant in Los Angeles. It was while working for McCulloch that she met and fell in love with James Koontz. They were married in 1958 and for the next 43 years were nearly inseparable. In the late '70s, she and Jim left their beloved Inglewood and moved to Rolling Hills Estates. Her varied interests included a love for Dixieland Jazz and the Koontz's made several trips across the United States to attend festivals and concerts. They also enjoyed spending time in Kernville, CA where they maintained a second home. Above all, Sandy valued the friendships she made among her neighbors and friends in Inglewood and Rolling Hills Estates. She often could be found organizing a dinner party, or planning to attend one. The devotion and love she had for her close friends withstood time and distance. Upon her husband's death in 2001, she spent her days in the care of her beloved poodles, and spending time with family. Alexandra was survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Jacquelyn DeLong of Torrance; five grandchildren, Tom (Carol), Mike, Tracy, Jim DeLong and Julie (Jeff) Vullo; and three great-grandchildren, Vinny Vullo, Elisabeth and Alexander DeLong. Services were held at Green Hills Memorial Park on Friday, February 22 at 9:00 AM. (An obituary was published by Daily Breeze, Torrance, California, on Feb. 18, 2008.)
