Irma Guthoerl Kilroy

Church Organist - Musical Family

In 1917, as a blue-eyed little girl of 13, Irma was named church organist and choir director of St. Basil's Catholic Church, Carrick (Pittsburgh). A tiny girl, her feet could barely reach the pedals of the big organ in the vast church.

From a musical family, she had been taught by her father, Professor Charles Guthoerl, who served as church organist and choir director of St. Peter's Catholic Church (South Pittsburgh) from Sept 15, 1890 until his sudden death in November 1933. He began teaching all of his children on the piano before they were old enough to attend school. By the time they were nine, he had trained them so well on the pipe organ that they were expected to be able to play a Mass.

Cleopha Guthoerl, Irma's sister, succeeded her father as St. Peter's Church organist and choir director. Her brother, Jerome Guthoerl, was the organist of St, Anthony's Chapel, Pittsburgh. Bertrand, the youngest brother, was organist and choir director at St. Agnes Church, Oakland, also in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. Stella Guthoerl Ruffenach, her half-sister, was organist at St. Francis Church (Pittsburgh). Brother, Cyril Guthoerl, was organist and choir director for the famous radio priest, Father Coughlin, at the Shrine of the Little Flower, near Detroit at Royal Oak, Michigan. Irma's niece, Mrs (Frank) Mary Grace Guthoerl Lehnert, granddaughter of Irma's father, Charles Guthoerl, was organist at St. Gabriel's Church in Whitehall (Pittsburgh). [Author's Note: I have not discovered details of the musical achievements of half-brother Carl who passed in 1923. Carl was father of Mary Grace. (GreenHills Stones Calling, Sep 2014)]
