Peter's parents were Pennsylvania German and came to Ohio about 1832-1833, locating at Circleville, in Pickaway County. He was born in Pennsylvania, and was fifteen years old before he mastered the English language. He was a farmer and a veterinarian, and during the last fifteen years of his life, he practiced his profession to the exclusion of other occupations. He had three brothers, and two sisters.

He married Mary Jane States in 1851, and they had seven children. In the spring of 1861 they came to Allen County, and settled on a farm near West Cairo. He died in Bluffton, Ohio in 1898.

Stone has an engraving of an arch and heaven's gates opened with the words "At Rest" above the gates.
