The daughter of John S. Cave and his wife Nancy Hunter.

As a fifteen-year-old, she helped care for the wounded after the Battle of Lone Jack in August 1862:

From "Life History of Matilda Ann (Cave) Reid", published in a newspaper, 1934:
"A wounded Union soldier was left at the Jake Bennett home for three weeks and was cared for by Mrs. Reid's two sisters, Mrs. Bennett and Susie Cave."

Susan married in Mar 1877, MO, probably Jackson Co., MO to Sydney Milton Simmons, born 12 Apr 1853, KY, son of Madison Simmons and his wife Sarah L. Botts. Two years later, her sister Berilda married Milt's brother, Eli Simmons.

Milton remarried on 28 Feb 1890, Lone Jack, Jackson Co., MO to Mrs. Sarah C. (Dealy) Crawford. He died before the 1900 census, when his widow and two new children were living in Cass Co., MO. She died in 1929 and is buried at Freeman Cemetery, Cass Co., MO.
