Clara Ann Gray Brookman was the eldest child of former Montgomery County coroner William A. Gray and Magdalene (Maggie) Aten Gray. Her siblings in birth order were:

George Archibald m. Emma Cocklereese
Myrtle Alice m. Frank Meisenheimer
Essie Agnes m. Albert Stinebaugh
Albert Charles

They were the grandchildren of Alexander and Amanda B. Choat Gray and Jacob and Mary Jane Squiers Aten.

Clara married Harry Edward Brookman in 1897 and they had one child, Ruth Isabel, born December 24th, 1898. Clara was a traditional homemaker who actively worked in the women's suffrage movement and the WCTU in the 1910s. She was also active in her church, St Paul's Lutheran Church, in Hillsboro. When Harry became ill with stomach cancer in 1912 and was unable to work she became the postmistress for the town of Butler and supported the family. She died in Hillsboro Hospital at the age of 39 from heart complications caused by pneumonia. It was related to me by my grandmother that Clara "got up from her hospital bed to walk to the window, started across the floor, and succumbed immediately."
