John was the son of John Fountain Avey & Mary Jane Wyatt. After his father's death in 1886, his mother moved to Texas with other family members.

He married:
(1) Josephine L. "Josie" Malott on 5 Oct 1876 in Clermont Co., OH
(2) Anna May "May" Sprinkle, about 1889.

John & Josie had at least three daughters: Bertha Leona (Jones); Lulu F. (Note that Lula is enumerated on the 1880 census as Mary F., but she is Lulu F. on her birth registration); and Ida May (Schmitt).

John & May had the following children: Joseph Milton; Lottie M. (Keller, Laudemann); Martha H. (Limerick, Mueller); Eunice Luella (Rains); Genevieve Beatrice (Dempsey); Harriet Eugenie (Dorsey); and John Russell.

John served during the Civil War in Co. D, 56th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. He also served in Co. K, 153 Infantry, Ohio National Guard.
