John Enos Lanning was born in 1842 or 1843 in Buncombe County, NC, and moved to the Turniptown area when he was three or four years old. He enlisted in the CSA army July 3, 1861 in Company D, 11th Regiment, of the Georgia Volunteers. This Regiment was made up of Gilmer County men, and was known as the "Gilmer Boys." It is said that at the Battle of the Wilderness he picked up the colors from a fallen color bearer and was almost immediately shot and killed by the enemy. It is thought that he was initially buried on the battlefield and later removed to the national cemetery at Fredericksburg, VA, where he was interred as one of the more than 12,000 "unknowns." The memorial here was placed in recent times. No birth date on stone. Not sure if he died in GA or body was sent back for burial.

John Enos Lanning died at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia and is buried in an unknown grave in Virginia. His body was not brought back to the family cemetery in Turniptown. My husband and my cousin's (Margie Lanning Dunn) husband carried the memorial stone up the mountain and placed it in the Lanning Family Cemetery in Turniptown, Gilmer County, GA. It is just a memorial stone and not the place of burial. John Enos Lanning was a brother of my great grandfather, Joshua Thomas Lanning, who is buried in the Lanning Cemetery.
