He was born on February 18, 1934, in Durham, North Carolina, a son of the late Gordon Earl Long Sr. and Annie Pernell Long.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Harold Long.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janet Wood Long; children, Jack Everett Long and his wife, Susan, of Norlina, North Carolina; Jeffrey Scott Long and his wife, Karen, of Waynesboro, Kenneth Earl Long and his wife, Christina, of Fishersville, David Mitchell Long and his wife, Valerie, of Charlottesville; grandchildren, Rebecca Elizabeth Long, Christopher Everett Long, McGregor Scott Long, Breanne Elizabeth Long, Stephanie Haven Long, Melody Elizabeth Long, and Mitchell Robert Long; brother, William Morris Long and his wife, Harriett, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a sister, Deborah Long Baber and her husband, David, of Durham, North Carolina; and a sister-in-law Martha Long.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, Earl was discharged in 1957. He retired from the Western Union Telegraph Company after 32 years of service. He was a long time resident of Waynesboro, Virginia. Earl was a licensed private pilot, a member of the Civil Air Patol, and the Culpeper Sheriff's Auxillary. He had numerous hobbies, including square dancing, scuba diving, snow skiing, and woodworking. He will be greatly missed, and never forgotten.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Waynesboro. A private interment service will be held at the Culpeper National Cemetery.
