CROSSVILLE — Funeral services for Ruby J. Wyatt Davis age 91 of Crossville, TN were held Tuesday June 7, 2011 from the Chapel of Hood Funeral Home. Bro. Phil Jenkins officiated with burial in New Era Cemetery. Pallbearers were Gerald Wyatt, Lowell Wyatt, Josh Wyatt, Jake Wyatt, Ricky Cox, Danny Tollett, Paul Davis, Ryan Davis, Chuck Davis, Spencer Taylor and Brandon Davenport. She passed away June 3, 2011 and had prepared her own obituary before her passing.
I was born May 14, 1920 at the old Pinkney Place- now the UT Grasslands Farm in Cumberland County to John Q. and Addie JonesWyatt. I taught elementary school in Cumberland County for thirty one years in these schools; Genesis, Rinnie, Oak Hill, Woody, Cumberland Elementary, Midway and Homestead. I was privileged to to meet and work with a large number of Cumberland County's finest people, the kids and to meet and mingle with families, which is wonderful.
I've always liked people. I know I've talked lots when I should have been listening, but I really enjoyed talking; trading stories; exchanging yarns, etc.
When I started to school I wasn't at all interested in learning what the books had. I learned everybody's name, where they lived, what their dads worked at, etc.
I was in second grade, Ruth Music was my teacher. She knew how to handle kids. She told me if I would do my work, get my lessons real good, she'd let me go in third grade at Christmas. Right then, I learned that the house wasn't a play house. I did all I was expected to do and never failed any more in school.
My hobbies were embroidering, piecing and quilting quilts, riding a horse and driving a car. I walked and rode a horse or mule so long that I love and appreciate a car beyond description. Due to an accident, my arm has put a damper on my writing and sewing. Open heart surgery stopped the horseback riding and various illnesses plus age put an end to driving. Ninety years sure changes ones activities!
During my ninety years I've approached several hills that were pretty hard to climb, but thanks to God, family or friends who have been there to give me the lift I needed to get over the rough spots.
Rewards I've gotten were: Teacher of the Month, Rose of Recognition from B&PW Club, Diamond Pin for Leadership and CCHS Hall of Fame. That award was a complete surprise. That was a top-notch award for which I am grateful. I thank everyone who had a part in that, especially the nice letters they wrote about me.
Preceded by my parents; John Q. and Addie, brothers, wives and children- Vaughn and Bea, Buddy and Richard Lee, Scott and stepson Norman Turner, Bradley and Golden, sister Gwendolyn, half-sister- Jane and husband Herman Davis.
Survivors- sister-in-law- Hassie Wyatt, nephews- Lowell and Gerald, grand nephews- Josh and Jake Wyatt, great grand nephew- Lane Scott Wyatt, stepchildren- Arthur Tollett and his wife Pat, Jack Davis and his wife Jerri Sue and Eddie Davis, numerous step grandchildren and great step grandchildren, special friend Carol Paris and her wonderful caregivers Renee Brown, Sharon Smith, Helen Norris, Irene Davis and Anita Davis.
Hood Funeral Home and Crematory, LLC (www.hoodfuneralhome.com) was in charge of the arrangements.
