John Echtinaw was born in Beaver Township, Mahoning Co., Ohio on November 13, 1835, the son of Peter and Rebecca (Snyder) Echtinaw. The grandfather of John Echtinaw was a native of Germany settling in Lancaster County, PA where he lived the remainder of his life. His father, Peter Echtinaw, was born and raised in Pennsylvania, moving to Mahoning County, Ohio in 1835. John Echtinaw was nineteen years of age when he moved with his family to Branch County, Michigan. After his marriage to Esther Morgan, they resided on Morgan Island at Coldwater Lake, Michigan where John Echtinaw was a skillful farmer on the island which later was renamed to Echtinaw Island.
