John Robert Ashby was the son of Nimrod ASHBY (b.1778) and Elizabeth Thomas ADAMS (b: 1782), both of Fauquier Co., Virginia.
John & Ellen Gillis Todd were married 10 Apr 1848 in Washington, DC, and their children were:
1. Annie "Nannie" Gillis, b.1849 (Mrs. Anderson)
2. Irving Gillis, b.1851
3. Elizabeth "Libby/Lizzie" Todd, b.1853 (Mrs. Wallace)
4. William Todd (Sr.), b.1856
5. Edwin A., b.1857 - d.1858 (infant)
6. Jay Taylor, b.1861
7. Maria Terese, b.1864 - d.1865 (twin/infant)
8. Mary Stuart Sweetzer, b.1864 (twin) (Mrs. Bacon)
His wife Ellen died 1 1/2 months after the birth of the twin girls, and the decease of one of them. John never remarried.
The newspaper notice read:
"ASHBY. On Sunday morning, at the residence of Mrs. William B. Todd, JOHN ROBERT ASHBY, in the 52d year of his age.
The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon, 7th instant, at half past 3 o'clock, from 224 C street northwest. Relatives and friends are invited to attend."
