Funeral of George C Abbey who was Instrumental in making Brooklyn Village a part of Cleveland

The funeral of the late George C Abbey was held from the family home at No. 667 Denison avenue Thursday afternoon. Rev. J. W. Hargrave preached and a quartet composed of Mrs W. C. Beveridge, Mrs W. Blake and Messrs. Wilbur Cunningham and Lincoln Wheelock sang "Nearer my God to Thee" "Lead, Kindly Light" and "The Last Hope".

Messrs, D. W. Hoyt, W. C. Towns, Theodore Forbes,DeWitt Cogswell, Eli Stephenson, and Morgan were the bearers.

The Services at the vault in Riverside cemetery were conducted by Brooklyn Post No. 368, Grand Army of the Republic and Brooklyn Lodge No. 454, Free and Accepted Masons.

Mr. Abbey was born in Portland, Conn., in 1843 and received his education at Glastonbury Academy. At the age of eighteen he enlisted in Company M. First Regiment Connecticut Heavy Artillery and served until the close of the civil war. His death occurred last Monday from an acute attack of pleuro pneumonia, which terminated fatally after two weeks duration. He leaves a widow and one daughter, Miss Bessie Abbey.

His former vigorous constitution could not recover from the hardships and privations of army life. His health was gradually undermined, he became an invalid and the last years of his life were saddened by great physical suffering.

Mr Abbey will be remembered as a man of strong principle and unfailing duty. One of the aims of his latter life was to secure to Brooklyn village all the adavantages which only annexation to Cleveland could give. Largely through his efforts, it is stated annexation was brought about.
