Longview Daily News:
Anna B. Downing, 86, of Castle Rock, died June 30, 2007, at the Hospice Care Center in Longview. She was born March 20, 1921, at home to Henry and Amelia (Roller) Berndt.

She lived all of her life in the Castle Rock area, attending school there. She was a homemaker who loved her home and family. She enjoyed cooking, making recipes from her childhood as well as trying out new recipes. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, gently teaching by example and kindness. Her home was a constant gathering place for all family members, especially during the Christmas holidays, which she greatly enjoyed. She was a gifted seamstress, enjoying sewing, hand embroidery, knitting, crocheting and creating beautiful quilts and afghans, which she generously showered upon all new babies in the extended family. She sold her creations at local bazaars for more than 40 years, which led to many dear friendships throughout those times. She delighted in hearing where her items were going, often hearing that they were being sent overseas to countries around the world. She loved her flower garden, birdhouses and birds, often recognizing the songs of local birds. She lived in harmony with nature.

Anna was the matriarch of a strong, devoted family consisting of three children, 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She always had time to hear any member's life details and always remained positive and supportive of her family. She was a loving soul who will be greatly missed by everyone whose life was touched by her giving spirit.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Fred Downing, on Dec. 11, 2006. They were married Feb. 19, 1938. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Selma Strain, and two grandchildren, Katherine Downing and Greg Downing.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Crocker (Gene) of Castle Rock; sons Ron Downing (Connie) of Eugene and Larry Downing (Gail) of Castle Rock; sisters Elsie Hansch, Evelyn Lemonds and Emma Cooley, all of Castle Rock, and Martha Olson of Graham, WA; brothers Ed Berndt and Walter Berndt, both of Castle Rock; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made to Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Castle Rock. Hubbard Funeral Home is in charge.
