"Tibby" was the oldest of 4 children born of Dr. William James Hail* and Alice Inghram Hail* who were Cumberland Presbyterian Missionaries, Dr. Hail was the Dean of Yale- in-China. She was born in Changsha, Hunan Province, China. She along with her family fled China in 1926 while being forced out of the country by the Nationalist troops of Chiang Kai-shek. The family returned to the United States and Dr. Hail accepted the position as the History Department Chairman at Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio.
Tibby graduated from Wooster H.S. then Wooster College and later married Edward Quinby, from a prominent Wooster family, and she was the mother of one son Edward who was born in 1953.
