Funeral Service will be at 3pm today, March 26, at Crestwood Memorial Chapel for Basal D. Baker, age 87, Hokes Bluff, who died Wednesday, March 24, 2011. Bro. Tom Hodge will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct services.

Basal was born in Eva, Alabama. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Gulf States Steel with 38 years of service. He and is wife, Mary, owned and operated Baker's Service Station in Hokes Bluff for several years and made many friends. He loved to bird hunt, fish, and farm. Basal was a Christian and attended East Gadsden Church of Christ. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and he will be greatly missed.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Nila Baker, brother Leon (Hester) Baker, Sister Jimmie (Auby) Turner, and his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Pillitary Baker.

He is survived by his daughters Glenda (Charles) Atchley amd Carolyn Baker; grandchildren April (Tim) Pate and Eric (Mindy) Kirkpatrick; great grandchildren Mackenzie, Sidney, and Eric Michael Kirkpatrick; sisters Iva Dean Dale and Yvonne (Jerry) Hall; brother Paul (Vangie) Baker; brother in law Ben (Ida Jo) Pillitary; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be James Dodd, Brad Dickson, Rodney Shields, Ricky Shields, Danny Dale, Tony Cleveland, and Terry Buchanon.

A special thanks to April Pate, Donna Jones, and Jon Atchley for their special tender care and Amedisys Hospice for their care and guidance.

The family will receive friends an hour prior to service at the funeral home today.
