Mrs.Ellen Philbrook,formerly of Decatur died at 4:30 am Saturday June 18, at her home at Tilton, N. H. It was announced Saturday morning that Mrs. Philbrook could not recover and friends in this city have known for several days that there was no hope.
Mrs. Philbrook was widely known in Decatur having lived here for many years and those with whom she was well acquainted esteemed her highly. Many expressions of sorrow were heard in Decatur from her old friends. About three years ago Mrs. Philbrook left Decatur and went to New Hampshire to occupy a home there. She was a niece of Mrs. Eddy, the leader in christian Science but Mrs. Philbrook did not share the views of her aunt, but was an Episcopalian in belief.
Mrs. Philbrook and her husband, Edwin Philbrook who died about ten years ago both were teachers in the Decatur schools. They both taught here from 1879 till 1885. Mrs. Philbrook was one year at the Jackson street school and for five years, the primary teacher at the Wood street school. She was regarded as a most excellent teacher and a woman of much more than ordinary ability.She was especially well informed in English literature and was for a number of years at the head of the Shakespeare division of the Womens Club.
Mrs. Philbrook was a sister to Mrs. John H. Crocker of Maroa and therefore an aunt of Mrs. W.H.Black of this city and John Crocker of Maroa. She came west to take a position in the Maroa schools and while there met and married Edwin Philbrook, who was principal of the Maroa schools.
From Maroa they went to Sabatha,Kan.where they remained several years and from that place to Blue Rapids, Kan. It was while they were located at the last named place that they were employed to each in the Decatur schools.
In St.Johns Episcopal church of this city, Mrs. Philbrooke was an active worker. She belong to several of he societies of the church and was one of the mmost earnest workers in the congregation. Personally Mrs.Philbrook was a delightful little woman to those whom she knew best. She was bright and clever, a great reader and a good talker. She was a strong minded woman of firm opinions and made close friends of those she care to know well.
John Crocker was at Tilton when Mrs. Philbrook died having been called there some days ago.
